DFG Long-Term Project
"Galen's Commentary on the Hippocratic Aphorisms"

The project

Galen of Pergamon (129-216 CE) wrote an extensive commentary on the Hippocratic "Aphorisms". The DFG has approved an interdisciplinary long-term project (Project number 521203885) with a team of six researchers focusing on the first four books of this commentary. The core of the project is a bilingual edition, in which the Arabic translation (produced in the 9th century) will be critically edited alongside the Greek text, taking into account all known textual witnesses. Both versions will also be translated into a modern language. The edition will provide the basis for extensive research into Galen’s activities as a commentator and on his position within ancient commentary literature. The edition will also be produced in a digital format allowing examination of the text and its various versions from a linguistic point of view.

The editorial and translation work is performed at the Department of Classics of the Humboldt University; the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences is responsible for the technical infrastructure and the digital edition.
